Nomination process for Nagaland, Meghalaya assembly elections ends

New Delhi,Feb 13:-- Former Nagaland chief minister and NDPP candidate Neiphiu Rio has been elected unopposed to the state Assembly after his opponent withdrew his nomination on Monday.

 

Withdrawal of nominations for Assembly elections in both Nagaland and Meghalaya ended Monday evening.

 

Briefing the media, Nagaland's Chief Electoral Officer Abhijit Sinha said Mr Rio's opponent and NPF candidate Chupfu-o withdrew his nominations from the Northern Angami-II seat of Kohima district.

 

Rio is also the Chief Ministerial Candidate of the NDPP.

 

 

 

 Mr Sinha said, a total of 195 candidates, including five women have been left in the fray for the 60 member Nagaland Assembly.

 

He said, to ensure free and fair polling, webcasting will be carried out from 555 polling stations, while videography will be done at the remaining 1,641 polling stations.

 

Mr Sinha said, as per the direction of the Election Commission, EVMS with VVPAT machines will be used on all the polling stations.

 

In Meghalaya, 372 candidates have been left in the fray for the 60-member Assembly.

 

According to Chief Election officer, out of 372 candidates, 340 are males, while 32 are females.

 

Both the states will go to polls on the 27th of this month to elect their new assemblies
